TF2 decided to redownload 3 GB on my desktop for no apparent reason. Seeing how my laptop only had a small patch and it updated fine, I decided to uninstall TF2 and reinstall with a backup from my laptop. I've done this before, no problem, it normally works.

This time, however, it didn't. Despite several attempts to make a backup, the files on the DVD always corrupted and I couldn't reinstall the game, or even transfer the backup to my hard drive. After messing with this all day Sunday TF2 died on me on Thursday, but I didnt get around to fixing it for a few days because I installed a new and was messing with it , I found out an alternate way of handling this is to copy and paste the files from my laptop directly into my steamapps folder. It recognized the files, and it said it was installed.

I try to boot up the game, and it tries to validate the files. After it's done, the game doesn't boot. So I boot it up again, once again, nothing. It just keeps validating the files without ever finding a problem with them, and it won't open up the game. I tried many things to fix this. I tried reinstalling TF2 again, this time via a backup I made and transferred over via the router instead of using DVDs. I tried deleting clientregistry. I removed all files from my steam folder except those in steamapps.

And, finally, and this was a big mistake I think, but I backed up my steamapps folder and then reinstalled steam. When steam came back, my planetside 2 install was fubared, and when I tried to backup from laptop, steam screwed up that one by refusing to make the backup and validating the files and trying to install an older version of the game.

I then spent the last few days redownloading it on my terrible connection actually did so twice because I accidentally killed it again. Some games installed some small patches, no problem.

However, now Black Ops and MW3 have the same problem. I boot them up, and steam tries to validate the files, finds nothing wrong with them, and then never starts the game. I'm tearing my hair out. How do I fix this? I'm now locked out of three games because steam won't boot them.

It just sits there validating files for the th time and then never does anything. And yes, before anyone asks, yes, I let steam finish validating. I just got done downloading a 3. MW3 is now trying to download a 5. It's beginning to detect files that are not there, and attempts to redownload them. But when you try to validate, it detects the files as missing again and tries to download what it just downloaded.

I wonder if this has something to do with Steam's new feature regarding picking your install paths After all, perhaps it's downloading the files to the wrong folder, or something like that. Yep, upon watching my MW3 folder for changes and what has been updated last during validation, I've concluded for some reason Steam keeps deleting and redownloading iw5mp.

I'm guessing that's why TF2 is wanting to redownload a 3. Once again deleted everything but steamapps folder, no difference. Problem also affects CS: S, and both Left 4 Dead games.
